Our last day before heading home. After a leisurely breakfast and some packing, we starting driving west. We stopped at Castillon-la-Bataille on the Dordogne for lunch. The town is notable in that it was the site of the last battle of the Hundred Years War in 1453. It was here that John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, and his son, John Talbot, Vicount Lisle, were killed by French forces. Bordeaux was then captured by the French, and the English were expelled from the Aquitaine. The battle is dramatized in Shakespeare's Henry VI. In 1953, the name of the town was changed from Castillon-sur-Dordogne to Castillon-la-Bataille. Every July and August, there are weekly re-enactments of the battle.
Our last views of the Dordogne.

As we drove, we took some pictures of the Bordeaux vineyards.

We dropped of our car at the Bordeaux airport and shuttled to the Hôtel Mercure Bordeaux Airport. The airport hotels are in an industrial park with nothing to see or do. We took a walk around the area, and rather than eating at the hotel, we found Eat Salad, a chain restaurant promoting healthy eating, founded by an enterprising young Frenchman who was visiting Time Square in New York City and saw long lines for a salad bar restaurant. He decided to bring back to France the concept of making salad the heart of the menu. Customers pick a greens base, and select how many extra ingredients to add. We enjoyed salads with fresh ingredients, and then walked back to the hotel.

We were up at 4 am for a taxi to the airport for a 6:30 am flight. Goodbye France for now. Au revoir.
